Confirm who owns the tree

Roanoke City Urban Forestry handles city tree concerns at (540) 853-2000. A tree in a street strip may be on public property; a private contractor’s bid does not decide ownership or permission. This guide is for Roanoke City, not Roanoke County.

Separate a limb issue from whole-tree risk

ISA describes pruning, changing the target, support and removal as possible responses after risk assessment. Ask a qualified arborist to assess the crown, trunk and root zone, especially if there are cracks, decay, lifted soil or a hanging limb. Keep away from unstable trees and power lines.

Put published cost context in its proper year

HomeBlue’s Roanoke trimming report, updated February 2021, estimates $169–$226 per hour for a three-person crew and about $510–$890 for a 3–4-hour job. Its March 2025 removal report gives a general $400–$1,900 range. Neither number reflects an inspected Roanoke City tree in 2026, and the two scopes should not be compared as if identical.

Ask what equipment and finish are included

Roanoke’s slopes, steps, narrow gates or adjacent structures are questions for a site visit, not a fixed premium. Ask each bidder how equipment reaches the tree, which branches or stems will be handled, whether debris and stump work are included, and whether nearby utilities or public space need coordination.
